Feedback, while essential for growth, can be a sensitive topic, especially when addressing underperformance. It’s easy to assume that being direct is all that’s required, but the true art of feedback lies in balancing honesty with empathy.
Many have been taught the “sandwich method.” That is, say something positive, then lay down the criticism, then finish with something positive. But this is a rather one sided conversation that oftentimes doesn’t get to the bottom of the real issue. Let’s reframe that today.
The Weight of Feedback:
1️⃣ Feedback Shapes Perception: How you deliver feedback can shape an employee’s perception of their value within the organization. Even if the intention is to help, poor delivery can demotivate and diminish self-worth.
2️⃣ A Two-Way Street: Feedback isn’t just about pointing out what’s wrong. It’s a conversation. Understanding the reasons behind underperformance can provide insight into systemic issues, training gaps, or personal challenges.
3️⃣ The Growth Potential: Properly delivered feedback can be the catalyst for immense growth. It can guide individuals toward the right resources, mentors, or strategies to improve.
A Vital Mantra:
“Honesty without empathy is cruelty.”
Remembering this phrase is key to delivering effective feedback. Being honest is crucial; sugarcoating doesn’t help anyone. But it’s equally important to frame that honesty within a context of understanding and care.
So, how can you incorporate this mantra into your feedback process?
☀️ Listen First: Before delivering feedback, give the individual a chance to share their perspective. They might offer insights you hadn’t considered.
☀️ Be Specific: Vague feedback can lead to confusion. Clearly define areas of improvement without making it personal.
☀️ Offer Solutions: Don’t just identify the problem; help pave the way towards a solution. Whether it’s additional training, resources, or regular check-ins, ensure the individual knows the next steps.
☀️ Express Belief: Let them know you believe in their potential to grow and improve. Reassurance can make all the difference in how feedback is received.
